Construction & Contractors Blog

Having a beautiful and unique bathroom is very important to many people. One place that is often neglected in a bathroom is the bathtub. The bathtub is often the one place where a lot of time is spent so having a beautiful tub should be important to you. If you need to have your tub refinished because the finish is cracked or peeled, consider painting an intricate design on the tub turn it into a beautiful piece of art that you can look at each and every day. Use the following guide to learn how to transform your tub quickly and easily.

Prepare the Tub

The first thing you need to do is clean the tub to make sure that you remove as much grime as you can. You can use any cleaner that is available in the supermarket to clean the tub. Next, use 80-grit sandpaper to carefully sand the entire surface of the tub. This will allow the paint to easily stick to the tub when you go to paint it.

Protect the Bathroom

You need to use painters tape to tape the edges of the tub so that you do not get paint on your floor or on the walls of the bathroom. At this point, you also need to open up the windows in the room to ensure proper ventilation.

Prime the Tub

When you buy a bathtub refinishing kit, it will come with a primer and an acrylic topcoat. You need to fill a paint gun with the primer and spray the entire surface of the tub with the primer in short even strokes. Be sure to allow the paint to dry for five to six hours before continuing.

Create Your Design

Once the primer has dried, you can use acrylic paint and a small paintbrush to create a design on the tub. You could also use a stencil in the very bottom of the tub if you want to create a very professional look. Allow the acrylic paint to dry for three to four hours before applying the top coat.

Finish the Tub

Fill the paint gun with the acrylic top coat and spray the entire tub with a thin coat of the clear paint. Allow the paint to dry for two hours and then apply another coat. Allow the second coat to dry for another two hours and then apply your final coat of clear top coating.

The tub needs to sit for at least a day or two before you try to use it. This will give the paint plenty of time to set to ensure that your tub looks as great as it possibly can for as long as possible.

Wasted Basement? Renovate It and Rent It

My husband and I have a large basement we've never really used. We started storing items in it, and it seemed like such a waste of a large area of our home. We also have a nephew in college in the area who we knew was paying a high price for an apartment he could barely afford. We came up with the idea of turning our basement into a mini-apartment and offering it to him for less than his current rent. He loved the idea, and the renovation was faster than we imagined it would be. We are all so happy it all worked out, and that we had a great basement to help my nephew through college at the same time. I created this blog to encourage others to use their basement for more than just holding boxes.
