Four Simple Ways to Keep Your Granite Countertops from Developing Mold

Home & Garden Blog

Granite countertops in the kitchen are an ideal choice for those who want an extremely reliable surface to work on in the kitchen. It is a sturdy material that is easy to clean, but it is still susceptible to mold, which can become a problem if you are not too careful. Learning how you can avoid excessive moisture exposure to granite can help you avoid mold issues.

Invest in a Grooved Cutting Board

When cutting any type of food, you should make sure to use a grooved cutting board. The grooved edge that surround the entire cutting board will prevent liquids from spilling onto the granite countertop. It is easy for these spills to go unnoticed, which makes it so important to keep them from happening.

Take Care of the Humidity

Having excessive humidity in your home is asking for a mold problem. However, it becomes worse in the kitchen when you are cooking because the steam that comes from the stovetop and hot water in the sink only add to the humidity level. You can easily solve this problem by investing in a dehumidifier, opening the kitchen windows, or using a tower fan to direct the air in the kitchen to the nearest exterior door.

Use a Dish Rack with a Drain Board

When washing dishes by hand, you want to prevent the water that drips off the dishes from getting on the countertop. The easiest way to do this is with a dish rack that has a drain board. Even if you have a dishwasher, some dishes cannot be washed inside, so having this rack is quite useful.

If you end up using a drain board with a slant, you should hang it right over the kitchen sink to allow the water to flow into the sink without touching the countertop. However, for drain boards without one, all you have to do is pick up the dish rack and pour the water in the sink after you put away the dishes.

Keep an Absorbent Towel in the Kitchen

Whether you are cooking breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack, you should keep a clean and dry absorbent towel in the kitchen at all times. Once you are finished in the kitchen, you can give the entire countertop a rubdown with the towel to pick up any excess moisture that got on the granite.

Since granite is susceptible to being weakened when exposed to common mold-killing ingredients such as vinegar, you need to focus on keeping mold from becoming a problem in the first place. Taking advantage of just a few simple kitchen accessories and cleaning methods will help you enjoy a mold-free granite countertop. Wasted Basement? Renovate It and Rent It

My husband and I have a large basement we've never really used. We started storing items in it, and it seemed like such a waste of a large area of our home. We also have a nephew in college in the area who we knew was paying a high price for an apartment he could barely afford. We came up with the idea of turning our basement into a mini-apartment and offering it to him for less than his current rent. He loved the idea, and the renovation was faster than we imagined it would be. We are all so happy it all worked out, and that we had a great basement to help my nephew through college at the same time. I created this blog to encourage others to use their basement for more than just holding boxes.
